Draw Day: Why Facebook is Culprit and How Best to React?

We have witnessed internet users in Muslim world adopting different strategies in reaction to “Draw Mohammad” (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa-aal-hi-Wasallam). Millions of Muslims are protesting against the intents of a community on Facebook that is planning to conduct a contest for Prophet Mohammad’s Drawings.

Background of Draw Day
To discuss it further, it is necessary to understand how and why this Draw Day came into existence.

The Idea to make funny cartoons of Prophet Mohammed [PBUH] came from a Seattle Cartoonist Molly Norris who thought of this campaign in reaction to Comedy Central’s decision to censor an episode of South Park with depictions of Prophet Muhammad [PBUH].

South Park was threatened by Muslims if it showcased Prophet Mohammad’s depictions.

Supporters of Draw Mohammad day say that the campaign is in reaction to killing threats by Muslims; however, they ignore the fact that Muslims’ threats were actually the reaction of South Part depictions. If Draw Mohammad Day supports want to react on reactions, then this chain is not going to stop anytime soon.
Later, on 27th April after a wave of anger from Muslims around the world, she decided to withdraw this activity justifying that she didn’t intend to hurt or disgrace some particular religion.

As always there is a third party to take advantage of a situation so here as well. A page was created on Facebook to continue the similar activity. Owner identity is unknown. The page created even more response than the original activity since page owners put completely disgracing sketches on it.

Supposedly and apparently, admins of this page, allegedly the jewish, created hundreds of groups and pages in order to help removing that page. This advertised the page even in thousand more way in result.

Freedom of Speech and Mohammad’s Depictions
Many argue over this fact that depicting Prophet Mohammad [PBUH] is their basic human right, given to masses by the law of many countries. But, this freedom of speech comes with limitations – Wikipedia Notes:
Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and by many state constitutions and state and federal laws.
There are exceptions to these general protection, including the Miller test for obscenity, child pornography laws, speech that incites imminent danger, and regulation of commercial speech such as advertising.
Within these limited areas, other limitations on free speech balance rights to free speech and other rights, such as protection from imminent or potential violence against particular persons (restrictions on fighting words), or the use of untruths to harm others (slander). Distinctions are often made between speech and other acts which may have symbolic significance.
Now for those who are depicting Prophet Mohammad [PBUH], they clearly know that this will create hatred, mass violence and worst possible impact on Muslims’ feelings.
How Muslims are Reacting?
  • Some go to said Fan page and they abuse the owners and non-Muslims there
  • Some go to Fan page in question and argues on different topics giving their logics to prove the Fan Page unnecessary and indecent
  • Some users are creating their Fan-Pages either opposing the fan page in question or otherwise for Prophet Mohammad praise (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa-aal-hi-Wasallam)
  • There are people who are ignoring the situation but are feeling really bad in their hearts, and are unable to do anything
  • There are people who are just not only ignoring all the happenings but they are not even concerned about the outcomes
  • There are people who are sad over the incident but accepting it as they can’t do anything
Facebook’s Role in Promoting Draw Day [Allegations]
Facebook, allegedly, is supporting the Draw Day, and here are our arguments:
  • Facebook is governed under its Terms of Services. Item 3.7 of Facebook TOS says “You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence”
  • “Draw Mohammad Day” was reported by at least 35,000 Facebook users, however, page is still live – giving the page a direct support (while it is spreading hatred – a violation of Facebook TOS)
  • During the campaign, Facebook is banning pages created by Muslims against Jews. In this one example, Facebook banned a Page with-in 20 minutes of its reporting by jews
The people from all over the world have reported the page but even after thousands of reports, Facebook hasn’t removed the page, giving its indirect support for the cause.

For instance one may think that it may be Facebook itself! And why not, while controversy will result in clicks, impressions, visits to this page making them earn more as well as the creation of hundreds of other new pages and groups with lot more activity as an investment for future.
Facebook is bone of contention: Because its only the Facebook that could create such an impact. With power, there was responsibility on Facebook, which it never met.

If Facebook had banned the Draw Mohammad page, in early days – none of this could have happened.
What will happen on Draw Day?

On the 20th, people will post pictures on Blogger, LiveJournal, wordpress.com, vox.com, TypePad, Flickr, Picasa, imgur, yfrog, twitpic, and of course, on their own blogs and in videos on Youtube and elsewhere. But again, Facebook is the root cause.

Why Draw Day is Worst than Previous Blasphemous Acts?
This instance of blasphemy is not like what it had happened before in Sweden and Norway. We know that there are websites that spreads blasphemous content across the web.

But, in this instance, Web Giant Facebook is part of the game, and while Facebook has roots to each corner of the world, you can calculate the scale of blasphemy on May 20th, 2010.

What Best we can do?
Unity, under one leader!
Large scale ridicule on May 20th will ignite worldwide riots and unrest. Even worst, anti-Islam elements now have found a way to tease Muslims.

As initial response: Pakistan government has reacted and banned said Fan Page (only one URL), under Pakistan Penal Code, article 295 and 298 that is related to blasphemy law.

Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom decides on what to ban and not to, based on the rules of the land.

It merits mentioning here that MoIT has already banned around 8 million pages on internet (As per Jang News) that has any in-appropriate content and which comes under blasphemy.

On 20th, MoIT will ban as much URLs as possible.

But, let’s go bigger – governments and Media from Muslim countries must unite at this time.

This war can’t be won on roads and battlefields; instead a strategic media campaign is needed to make the western world realize that they are acting in uncivilized manner. It is them who are creating unrest and doing extremist activities.

To Boycott or Not to Boycott
There are opinions for and against boycotting the Facebook. There are people who think boycotting the Facebook is a form of protest – to make the Facebook administration realize their biased strategy, while others think they will stay on Facebook and will fight on the platform.

High-tech training gadgets help users get buff

Now that the weather is warming up, many locals will hit the gym in an effort to shed extra pounds they put on over the winter and slim down ahead of summer.

But you don’t have to shell out big bucks to personal trainers to get fit. Today, some advanced gadgets can be as effective as personal help - and perhaps not as pushy.

For amateur runners who aren’t sure how fast or how far they should run, Adidas has launched its miCoach Pacer, a device you can strap around your arm to receive real-time audio coaching through earphones.

In line with its ad slogan “every runner is different, every heart is different,” people can input their physical profiles on miCoach Pacer’s Web site  and set workout goals.

The device then measures heart rate, pace and calories burnt, among other information, as users run and provides guidance as well.

The device works in conjunction with a heart rate monitor, a stride sensor and earphones. It is also compatible with most MP3 players so runners can enjoy music while breaking a sweat.

“The miCoach Pacer coaches runners according to their physical profiles and conditions. It can also prevent amateur runners from suffering the side effects from excessive running,” said Ji Yeong, a manager at Adidas.

Nike also features a similar product, the Nike+ Sensor. Runners can insert the sensor in Nike+ running shoes. The device measures the distance and pace of a walk or run and sends that information to the Nike+ Sportband, an iPod or an iPhone 3GS.
It’s not just sportswear and equipment makers introducing these personal training gizmos. Samsung Electronics added a workout measurement function to its Popcorn Yepp U5 MP3 Player. The device audibly tells users how long it’s been since they began working out and how many calories they are burning.

Iqua, a Finland-based maker of headsets and hands-free devices, also rolled out its BHS-603 SUN, which it claims is the first solar-powered Bluetooth headset. As it can be charged with sunlight, it’s especially useful for outdoor activities.

Sony’s earbud-style MP3 player, called the W-series Walkman, is another audio option, as it doesn’t hinder movement.

For those who like to hit the links, LG Electronics, the world’s No. 3 maker of handsets, is featuring a golf-friendly touchscreen phone, the LG SB210. With built-in golf course info, an electronic compass and GPS, the handset guides golfers through the course. If you are into mountain climbing or biking, Samsung Electronics’ Anycall Extreme phone comes with a built-in electronic compass, altimeter and a device that measures strides.

Sony announces the NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras

The Sony Alpha NEX-5, at 24.2mm thick, is described by Sony as being the 'world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens digital camera'. The camera is mirrorless, similar to the micro-four-thirds system cameras from Panasonic and Olympus. With no internal mirror built in, the body of the camera can be smaller and lighter.

Both the NEX-3 and the NEX-5 have 14.2Mp Exmor APS HD CMOS sensors, which are more akin to sensors found on digital SLR than compact cameras, and should therefore reduce the effect of graininess in pictures - particularly when shooting.

In low light. Both cameras will launch in June alongside three compatible lenses from Sony. The SEL16F28 is a fixed 16mm pancake lens, while the SEL1855 is a more versatile zoom. The new cameras will be available to buy with one or both of these lenses.

The SEL18200 lens will also be available offering an 11x optical zoom, however this will need to be purchased separately. An ultra wide len converter (VCL-ECU1) and a fisheye lens converter (VCL-ECF1) will be available to mount to the pancake lens.HD video on the Sony NEX cameras To find the best digital camera, read our digital camera reviews.

The LA-EA1 lens mount will be available, which will allow users to connect a number of digital SLR lenses to the NEX-3 and NEX-5. Both models can capture HD video at 1920x1080 resolution and the NEX-3 can capture HD video at 720p.

Which is more suitable for uploading to video-hosting sites on the internet. Sony claims that the NEX-3 and the NEX-5 can both capture seven still frames per seconds at full resolution, and have an on-screen guide to help users become more familiar with manual photography.

Firefox apps for iPhone is coming very soon.

Continuous client functionality, you say? Sounds like Mozilla might be just what the doctor ordered. The company has announced that its upcoming Firefox Home app is coming soon to the iPhone. The program will sync up with your desktop client so that you can go mobile with all your browsing history, bookmarks and "the set of tabs from [your] most recent browser session" going along for the ride. Not only that, but there's an "Awesome Bar" -- Mozilla's words, not ours -- that'll let you search through everything and predict options based on the available data. While not a "full" Firefox browser, according to the blog post (with the addendum, "either technically or due to policy"), the pages still load from within the app itself. Meizu M9 specs revealed

The Meizu M8 may well be one of the best iPhone clones out there, but it’s still a clone. Now, it looks like the iPhone copy-cats are making yet Meizu smartphone. Following the Meizu M8 Mini One, Meizu is working on the Meizu M9. While it still may look like a iPhone knockoff (with some WebOS flavoring thrown in for good measure) it bests the iPhone 3GS in terms of specs. And, it’s quite the looker, to boot!
I’m not sure if anyone saw this coming, but the M9 looks to be a device that people may actually want. Hell, people would want this device if it wasn’t an iPhone knock off. This baby has quite an impressive specs sheet that makes even the geekiest of geeks swoon.
  • Dimensions: 59.5 mm x 113 mm x 11mm
  • Networks: WCDMA, CDMA, TD-SCDMA
  • 3.6 “ touchscreen at 720 × 480 resolution
  • 1 GHz Samsung S5PC110 processor
  • 512 MB ROM / 512 MB RAM
  • Android OS 2.1
  • 5MP camera
  • HDMI out
  • Bluetooth / WiFi / GPS / TV-out (HDMI 1.3)
  • Micro SD / TF
  • 1350 mAh battery
  • Price around € 255 without headphones or € 290 with headphones and 8GB storage

Get a load of these guys with their nice collection of specs! Who knows what the UI will look like, but it’s nice to see that they are using a real OS rather than some fake iPhone UI. But that being said, we’ve seen Android looking like the iPhone before in tablet form. It should be interesting to see how Meizu modifies Android  OS for their M9. Hopefully they won’t throw away all of Android’s functionality with an iPhone skin, though.

With Android 2.1, 1 GHz processor, HDMI port, and 5 megapixel camera in tow, the M9 should surely please. The specs above were really the last I was expecting for this device, but hell, I’m really impressed. There are so many things a smartphone can do nowdays, and the M9 looks like it hits on many of the major parts. Too bad it’s very unlikely that we’ll be seeing the Android Market on this device.

Nokia simplifies its organizational structure to accelerate execution and innovation

To increase competitiveness and deliver a stronger and more differentiated consumer experience, Nokia will introduce a simplified company structure for its devices and services business comprised of three units: Mobile Solutions, Mobile Phones and Markets. Effective July 1, 2010, the move aims to accelerate product innovation and software execution in line with the company's goals of integrating content, applications and services into its mobile computer, smartphone and mobile phone portfolio.

The new Mobile Solutions unit will concentrate on the company's high-end mobile computer and smartphone portfolio.  Based on both the MeeGo and Symbian software platforms respectively, these devices will be tightly integrated with Nokia's Internet services to increase the combined value for consumers.
The renewed Mobile Phones unit will focus on maintaining Nokia's leadership in the feature-rich mobile phone market and driving the direction of Series 40, the world's largest mobile operating system. Both the Mobile Solutions and Mobile Phones units will have dedicated portfolio management, including product planning, R&D and dedicated software assets.
Markets will be responsible for Nokia's 'go-to-market' activities, including sales and marketing, management of Nokia's global supply chains and sourcing operations.
"In addition to extending our leadership in mobile phones, we are decisively moving to respond faster to growth opportunities we expect in smartphones and mobile computers," says Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO of Nokia. "Nokia's new organizational structure is designed to speed up execution and accelerate innovation, both short-term and longer-term.  We believe that this will allow us to build stronger mobile solutions - a portfolio of products and integrated services that connect people and enable new ways of communicating, sharing and experiencing mobility."
To strike the right balance between business continuity, professional competencies and faster execution, this organizational realignment includes changes among Nokia's senior executives.
The Mobile Solutions unit will be headed by Anssi Vanjoki and be comprised of MeeGo Computers, led by Alberto Torres, and Symbian Smartphones, led by Jo Harlow. As part of the Mobile Solutions unit, Services - led by Tero Ojanpera - will continue to develop Ovi as an integrated service into smartphones and mobile computers, and lead the development and deployment of new services into Nokia's mobile phones. Nokia has also appointed Rich Green to the position of Chief Technology Officer, assuming responsibility for driving common technology architecture across Nokia. Green brings a wealth of experience from his time in Silicon Valley, including a number of years at Sun Microsystems. He will report to Anssi Vanjoki.
Headed by Mary McDowell, the Mobile Phones unit will work closely with Services to add value to lower-end devices through offerings such as Ovi Life Tools, Ovi Mail, Ovi Store and Nokia Money.
The Markets unit will continue to focus on Nokia's overall sales and marketing efforts, solution selling, transformation to digital marketing and consolidation and globalization of Nokia's supply chain and sourcing. Markets will be headed by Niklas Savander.
Kai Oistamo assumes the role of Chief Development Officer and head of Corporate Development.
Rick Simonson, who currently heads Mobile Phones, has decided to retire from full-time duties at Nokia. Simonson will leave the Nokia Group Executive Board effective June 30, 2010. However, he will continue as a senior advisor to Nokia, focusing on Nokia Siemens Networks, until the end of the year. Simonson will continue to serve as a member of Nokia Siemens Networks' Board of Directors after he leaves Nokia.
"Rick has made a substantial contribution and leaves behind a legacy in operational and financial leadership. I would like to thank him for his invaluable contribution," says Kallasvuo. "We will certainly miss Rick, but are pleased he will continue as a senior advisor to Nokia until the end of year, and continue as an NSN board member beyond that."
As of July 1, 2010 Nokia's Group Executive Board will consist of the following members: Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Esko Aho, Juha Akras, Timo Ihamuotila, Mary McDowell, Kai Oistamo, Tero Ojanpera, Niklas Savander, Alberto Torres, and Anssi Vanjoki.
A chart of the new organizational structure, valid from July 1, 2010, is available at http://www.nokia.com/A4630650?category=company

Nokia Sues Apple in Wisconsin for Infringement of Nokia Patents

Nokia announced that it has today filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, alleging that Apple iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe five important Nokia patents.

The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices. These patented innovations are important to Nokia's success as they allow improved product performance and design.

"Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices" said Paul Melin, General Manager, Patent Licensing at Nokia. "We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia's innovation."

During the last two decades, Nokia has invested approximately EUR 40 billion in research and development and built one of the wireless industry's strongest and broadest IPR portfolios, with over 11,000 patent families. Nokia is a world leader in the development of handheld device and mobile communications technologies, which is also demonstrated by Nokia's strong patent portfolio.

Sony Ericsson X10 Family To Be Up-Androided; About Bloody Time

Sony Ericsson has come with an official schedule for upgrading the firmware on the Xperia X10 and its X10 mini and X10 mini pro siblings, which places the Android 2.1 delivery in the fourth quarter of 2010; somewhere close to Christmas this year.

Services offered on the X10 mini & pro versions differ slightly from X10, and they are:

Facebook
• Status updates from friends
• Friend’s photo
• Inbox Message
• Friend Requests

Twitter
• Tweets from people user are following
• Tweet replies
• Direct message

SMS/MMS
• Incoming SMS and MMS messages

Phone calls
• Missed phone calls

Unfortunately there won’t be any multi touch available on any one of these devices. According to an official SE spokesperson:

“It is correct that the X10 will not support multi-touch. However with the X10’s signature applications, the X10 offers an excellent user experience.”

I’m assuming he’s talking about the Timescape app, which is pretty cool actually.
The fact is the underlying hardware on the devices does NOT support multi touch, so even a software hack would not work. So what you have is a phone whose hardware does NOT support multitouch, but whose OS does. I’m thinking loyal consumers might want to buy the upgraded OS devices regardless; for them multitouch might be an added bonus, but not essential.

I was kind of hoping that Sony Ericsson would have the good sense to leapfrog Android 2.1 & ship devices with the rumoured Froyo OS. Seems like they think that consumers will buy anything they put on the shelves.

Samsung announces Monte Iron Man Edition for O2.

The phone will be exclusive to O2 UK customers, with the same specifications as the original Monte, it will come bundled with an SD card loaded with the original Iron Man movie.

The phone has an amazing look and is really eye catching but i am sure it will be a tad priced over the plain Monte but if your a fan of the series and like the look of the body why not pay for a good phone?

* 3-inch capacitive touchscreen

Hotel booking services such as HRS and Expedia make it easy to find a place to stay.
In-car navigation made easier
For people planning a road trip, Nokia has started to include car kits with new smartphones in-the-box* at no extra cost which makes finding new places and navigating whilst driving safe and easy. And, with the added convenience of pedestrian routes for exploring cities on foot, swapping the phone from car to pocket makes navigating around new places easier, no matter how people choose to do it.
Holidaymakers can plan routes before leaving the house, on a computer or laptop and simply upload them onto a Nokia device to use when abroad. This saves time searching for routes when out and about and enables people to use maps in offline mode, reducing roaming costs when traveling in foreign countries.

No solidified release date yet -- it's still being polished for app store submission, but Opera's luck give us hope for a smooth approval. In the meantime, you can get a quick preview in the video after the break.

With the release of Marvel’s highly anticipated sequel “Iron Man 2″ Samsung is releasing a phone dedicated to the movie called the Samsung Monte Iron Man Edition which will only be available to O2 customers.

LG isn’t the only phone company hyped up for Marvel’s Iron Man, as Samsung has also announced that it'll shortly be launching a special version of its Monte handset in honour of the release of Iron Man 2. It'll be available exclusively on O2.

The phone will be available from may 1st 2010, and the specs of the Monte are:
* 3-inch capacitive touchscreen
* 3.2-megapixel camera
* FM radio
* GPS
* Wi-Fi
* Bluetooth
* Samsung TouchWiz UI
