Your Old Phone is Amazing - Recycle it! Nokia Pakistan Announced its Recycling Program for Pakistan

Nokia Pakistan announced the launch of its recycling program in Pakistan. The program will have recycle boxes at all 9 Nokia Care centers across the country. The initiative is launched to invite the mobile phone users to recycle their old phones with Nokia. The company committed that they are running the recycling process in the most effective and efficient manner in many countries across the world.

According to Nokia's global consumer survey on recycling, only 3% of people recycle their mobile phones despite the fact that on average most have several old devices lying around at home they no longer want. 74% of people said they don’t think about recycling their mobile phones while 50% of the people were unaware that it is possible to recycle mobile phone.

Nokia takes environmental aspects of its activities in various areas in accordance with the product life-cycle approach. Nokia is committed to products, materials, energy efficiency, product take-back and recycling options, and packages to help improve the environment.

"Nokia's goal is to support environment-friendly lifestyle by offering consumers the opportunity to deliver any brand of the old and obsolete cell phones easily at the nearest Nokia Care center for recycling. Various studies indicate that unused equipment can be found in many consumer desk drawers. While such phones may seem worthless, they are actually valuable and re-usable material. Nokia phone can be recycled or turned into energy, so that nothing is wasted and nothing goes to a landfill.  If every Nokia user recycled just one unused phone at the end of its life, together we would save nearly 125,000 tonnes of raw materials” said Adeel Hashmi, Country Communications Manager, Nokia Pakistan and Afghanistan.

"To promote recycling as a common practice, it is important to know what mobile phone recycling means and how easy it is to recycle.  We want to help overcome some of the barriers to recycling phones, like worrying about losing the numbers or photos you’ve got stored on your phone. These barriers mean that return rates from most of our collection schemes are currently very low; we get back just 3 percent of redundant phones. Nearly half of these are sitting unused in people’s drawers. As part of our recycling program, we’re helping consumers, retailers and our service network to bring those phones back for recycling." said Reza Burney, Care Manager, Nokia Pakistan & Afghanistan.

Recycling your old mobile phone is easy. Just remove your old SIM and take your old phone - along with old chargers, accessories or batteries – to your nearest recycling point and Nokia will take care of the rest. Nokia takes the responsibility to make it as easy as possible to recycle mobile devices that are no longer in use, no matter what mobile phone brand it is. Recycling gives a second life to your old phone. When manufacturing each mobile phone, Nokia ensures that the phone is not just good to use but is kind to the planet as well, for this reason we have now ensured that all Nokia phones are 100% recyclable.
Ovi Store also supports Nokia’s recycling program by offering a variety of apps that help users embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. A complete list of environment-friendly apps is available on www.ovi.com/dogood website.

It's brilliant to see a company like Nokia taking more responsibility in environmental issues. These multinational companies should be doing more considering the amount of profit they make annually and I completely agree that it should be invested in programmes which will help sustainability. I think after a while recycling mobile phones will be a normal thing but people just need to be more aware of it.
