How to Install Nexus One Software Update

Google Nexus Unbox - 42Google rolled out a software update for the Nexus One a couple of days ago which brought the multitouch goodiness and several other updates and speed improvements.

This update was slowly rolled out to all the Nexus One users OTA (over-the-air), but as Google also provided the software update to download, us ‘geeks’ can update our phone without having to wait for it to arrive OTA.

How to Install Nexus One Software Update

Here’s a simple, step by step procedure using which you can update your Nexus One software manually.

Disclaimer: Try this on your own risk. I’m not responsible if you mess up with your Nexus One.

NOTE: The instructions below are only for the stock (unmodified bootloader, recovery etc) Nexus One. This procedure is NOT for rooted devices.

1. Download the Nexus One Android 2.1 software update 1 (15MB in size) on your PC.

2. Rename the downloaded .zip file to ‘update.zip‘.

3. Connect and mount your Nexus One SD card on your computer using the USB cable.

4. Now copy/paste the update.zip file to your SD card. Make sure the file is in the SD card root. It should not be in a directory.

5. Then turn off your phone.

6. Now to get in the bootloader mode, turn on the phone while pressing and holding the trackball and power button.

7. Follow the navigation instructions on the screen. Select BOOTLOADER and then go to RECOVERY.

8. When in recovery, you will see an Android bot with no text on the screen. Hold the power button and press the volume up key once. Recovery menu should be visible now.

9. Using the trackball, select the second option “apply sdcard:update.zip“. The installation procedure should start now.

10. After the installation completes, reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now” from the recovery menu. It might look as if stuck again on the Android bot, but it will soon reboot.

That’s it! You’re Nexus One should have the latest software update installed on your phone! Go to Settings >About phone to verify.
